These are only some of the reasons we value our local yarn shops and want to keep them successful here in the Houston area. At the February 9th meeting of Chix with Sticks we will have Michelle McHazlett\, the owner of Park Avenue Yarns in League City\, talk about her experiences as a local yarn shop owner. SUMMARY:CHIX Mtg - Knit One Below
DESCRIPTION:If you like brioche stitch\, the knit-one-below stitch (K1B) achieves a similar effect but involves no yarn overs\,  burps or barks.   All you need to know is how to knit and purl.   You can create a dense brioche-like texture with a single color or columns of 2-colors in stockinette. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nHOMEWORK:\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor the first sample\, you will need a worsted or bulky yarn and a set of needles size 8 or above (either straight or circular needles).  Cast on 13 stitches and knit 2 rows of garter stitch then a row of K1P1 ribbing.  You will begin and end with a knit stitch. Leave the knitting on your needle.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor the second sample you must have either a circular needle or double points because you will slide your work  and work a second row before turning the needle.  The pattern will be worked in four rows: 2 on the RS then 2 on the WS.  You should bring 2 contrasting colors of yarn.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWith color A\, cast on 13 stitches loosely\, preferably using a long tail cast on.  Without turning the needle\, slide the stitches to the other end of the needle\, join color B at the beginning of the cast on stitches and purl across the row.  Both A and B yarns will now be at the same end of the needle.

DESCRIPTION:Due to a scheduling conflict\, our February meeting has been changed to the One-Skein Project we talked about at the December party.  In case you missed the last couple meetings\, here are the details. \nEither knit a small project using a single skein of yarn or look through the projects you already have finished and pick one you don’t mind getting  rid of!  Bring it to the February meeting where we will auction them off to each other – no real money here\, just “Paula Bucks”\, the fake bucks that Paula has been handing out at each meeting.  Don’t worry if you don’t have any bucks – some people who only have a few (like me!) will likely give theirs away to others. \nThe auctioned items will also be anonymous.  Come to the meeting even if you don’t have anything to auction – you may get some ideas for future projects!

DESCRIPTION:HOMEWORK:  \nMake four small swatches using smooth\, light colored yarn.  It is easiest to see with worsted weight yarn\, but any weight yarn and appropriate needles will work.  Wet block them so the edges lay flat.  \n \nSwatches 1 and 2:\nCast on 6 stitches\, leaving a 10″ tail.  Work 16 rows in stockinette stitch\, then work 16 rows in garter stitch.  On these swatches DO NOT slip the selvedge stitches. Bind off\, leaving a 10″ tail for seaming.\n \nSwatches 3 and 4:  \nCast on 10 sts and work 10 rows of stockinette stitch.  DO NOT bind off these swatches but leave each on a needle.  We will join the live stitches wth 3-needle bind-off\, then crochet the selvedges together.\n \nBring with you:\n\nYarn for seaming\, the same as your swatches or a similar yarn of a different color\nDarning or tapetry needle.\nAnother knitting needle of the size used for your swatches\nCrochet hook of appropriate size for your swatch yarn.  (Size H is good with worsted weight yarn.)\nScissors

This technique appeared in Vogue knitting spring/summer 2015. \n\nMaterials:\n\nA ball of yarn for your main color\n2 to 4 high contrasting yarns (at least 4-8 feet of each color)\nA darning-needle\n\nAll yarn (main and contrasting colors) should be the same weight; either DK or Worsted weight is recommended.  \nHomework:\n\nCast on 48 stitches in the round in any technique that you choose with your main color yarn and knit for 1 inch.

DESCRIPTION:Chix will have Tamara Gooderham as our guest speaker. Tamara will begin her presentation at 10:10 am.  Please be prompt. \nHomework will be as follows:\n      Knit a square approximately 5″ by 5″ in a worsted weight yarn in stockinette stitch (knit one row\, purl one row).\n      Don’t cast on or bind off too tightly since we will crochet into these stitches.\n      A smooth light colored yarn would best.\n      Please block the square beforehand and bind in the ends.\nBring:\n\nthe knitted stockinette stitch square\nmore yarn in the same color\n4 stitch markers to put in the corners\na crochet hook half a metric size larger than the needle size used\n(If you use size 7 / 4.5 mm needles bring a size 8 H 5mm crochet hook).\n\nSkills required: Need to know how to do chain\, single and double crochet stitches.
