SUMMARY:CHH Spinners - "The Boro Phenomenon"
DESCRIPTION:Boro\, literally\, “rag” in Japanese\, refers to objects that have been used\, broken\, and worn to tatters\, then lovingly mended to last far beyond their expected life. \nAntique Japanese boro textiles\, much like patchwork quilts in America\, eventually came to be appreciated for their artistic qualities which have much in common with contemporary art. They are now seen as a prime example of the slow fashion movement\, which promotes re-use of textiles for sustainability and reduction of waste. \nOur speaker\, Yoshiko Wada\, is a textile artist\, curator\, art historian\, scholar professor and author. An internationally known expert on shibori\, boro and other Janese arts\, Yohshiko has received multiple awards for her work\, including the George Hewitt Myers Award recognizing “lifetime achievements and exceptional contributions to the field of textile arts.”\nFor more on Yoshiko and her work visit her website: https://yoshikowada.com/ \n  \nYoshiko will be giving her lecture live from England via Zoom.

SUMMARY:KIND Meeting - Yarn Cake Cast On
DESCRIPTION:Phylis Tomlinson will present the “Yarn Cake Cast On.” \nThis is a little like burning the candle at both ends! Casting on from both ends of the cake or ball of yarn takes the guess work out of a long-tail cast on. It is simple and can be found on YouTube in a heartbeat\, but this is an opportunity to have someone demonstrate and then practice with your fellow knitters. \nPlease bring a cake of yarn and appropriate-sized needles (straight or circular are both fine.)  If you have a hank and no winder there will be a swift at the meeting to create your cake. If your preference is to hand-wind\, do so in a manner in which both ends of the ball are accessible.

SUMMARY:KNOW Meeting - KAL: Multidirectional Diagonal Scarf
DESCRIPTION:KNOW’s July program will be a knit-along presented by Jan Clark. We will be knitting the “Multidirectional Diagonal Scarf“\, which is a free pattern available on Ravelry (https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/multidirectional-diagonal-scarf). \n  \nThis scarf looks great with variegated or self-striping yarn. A good yarn to try would be a DK weight\, knit with size 6 needles\, or try a heavier yarn with appropriate needles for a faster finish. You can use the same yarn throughout or different yarns in each triangular section of the scarf as a way to use some leftover stash yarn. It’s also possible to use two yarns held together for a different look. There are so many possibilities that you may want to make more than one! \nThis is a fun project for knitters with limited experience and for highly skilled knitters. If you have not previously knit short rows\, this is your opportunity to learn!! \nMembers are also invited to show and share any of your completed projects. \n  \nMembers often arrive early to visit over dinner and show their support to the restaurant for their generosity in allowing us to meet there. Visitors and members from other chapters are always welcome.

SUMMARY:KIK Meeting - Afterthought Sock Heel
DESCRIPTION:The afterthought heel is a term coined by the late Elizabeth Zimmerman in her “Knitting Without Tears” book. The heel is knitted after the leg and foot of your sock are completed. It’s a great technique to know for working heels in a contrasting color. \nAt our July meeting\, Irene Piatek will teach us how to knit this heel. \n* Details of your homework assignment will be forthcoming prior to our meeting.

SUMMARY:KNOW Meeting - Crewel Embroidery
DESCRIPTION:KNOW’s June program will be an “Introduction to Crewel Embroidery on Hand Knits“. \nWe’ll be exploring the very hot trend of visible mending on garments and learning how to add embellishments to our hand knitted items. The visible mending movement has been driven by people interested in sustainability and who are concerned by the environmental impact of “fast fashion”. \nIf you’d like to try crewel embroidery you’re invited to “shop your closet” and bring a knitted garment\, or maybe a swatch or a dishcloth to work on. \nYou’ll also need a blunt tapestry needle and some fingering or worsted weight scrap yarn\, or embroidery floss\, or needlepoint tapestry yarn (we’ll bring some too). If you’ve done visible mending before\, please bring in any examples to share with other members and inspire us all. \n  \nMembers are also invited to show and share any of your completed projects. \n  \nMembers often arrive early to visit over dinner and show their support to the restaurant for their generosity in allowing us to meet there. Visitors and members from other chapters are always welcome.
