DESCRIPTION:Did you know that there is a fiber mill just 90 minutes from Cypress?  There is!  Come tour one of the few fiber mills in Texas and learn how commercial yarn is spun\, from fleece to final product.  And it being spring\, there just may be baby goats that need some cuddling.  The tour includes both the mill and the dye shed (and the baby goats) and an opportunity to purchase yarn spun by the mill.   \nAll those wishing to carpool to Independence Farmstead Fiber Mill should meet at the Starbucks at 25615 Hwy 290 in Cypress by 8:30 am.  The drive to the mill is approximately 1 hour.  RSVP is not necessary but if you would like to RSVP\, here is the FB link to the carpooling information.  \n

SUMMARY:KNIT Meeting - UFOs and Slime!
DESCRIPTION:UFO…not the ET variety\, but those Unfinished Objects that knitters try not to identify!  Bring your UFOs to the May meeting and spend the evening as a sit-and-stitch. \nThe second part of the activity is exploring ASMR – Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response.  ASMR is a pleasant physical or emotional feeling (not based on science) triggered most often by soft sounds such as vocal fry\, rustling leaves\, crinkling paper\, scratching dry skin\, and in this case\, SLIME! \nJenny Quattlebaum will provide the fun ingredients including a PVA glue base (Elmer’s School Glue)\, glitter\, beads\, and food coloring.  Attendees can mix these different mediums to create their own bag of squishy and stretchy slime to take home.  Lastly\, we will talk about different crunch textures and other sounds or sensations that give us the ol’ warm fuzzies!

These are only some of the reasons we value our local yarn shops and want to keep them successful here in the Houston area. At the February 9th meeting of Chix with Sticks we will have Michelle McHazlett\, the owner of Park Avenue Yarns in League City\, talk about her experiences as a local yarn shop owner. DESCRIPTION:Steek!  Eek! – That’s the theme of our April meeting.  Be adventurous and join us as we boldly embark on an event where only fearless knitters dare…that is\, cutting our knitting with courage and fortitude.   \nSupplies \n\nThe pattern used for the project is “Steek This Coffee Cozy” by Rachel Henry\, and it is free on Ravelry.  This is knitted in the round.\nWorsted weight 100% wool (avoid superwash) – at least three colors\nCircular needles or DPN appropriate for the yarn weight\nScissor\n\n  \nHomework \nYou can knit the cozy using the charted Fair Isle pattern given\, or you can knit stripes\, or your own pattern\, or only one color.   \nThe important part is that you work the number of stitches called for (begins with only 49 and increases up to 53) for close to the number of rows given (only 25!).   \nWe will steek your knitting\, make the band\, and sew on buttons as time allows at the meeting.  \nScary\, fun things (like roller coasters\, haunted houses\, etc.) are always more fun with friends.  Knit your cozy and come to the Steek! Eek! Meeting.  We will cut our knitting together!

SUMMARY:CHIX Mtg - Knit One Below
DESCRIPTION:If you like brioche stitch\, the knit-one-below stitch (K1B) achieves a similar effect but involves no yarn overs\,  burps or barks.   All you need to know is how to knit and purl.   You can create a dense brioche-like texture with a single color or columns of 2-colors in stockinette. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nHOMEWORK:\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor the first sample\, you will need a worsted or bulky yarn and a set of needles size 8 or above (either straight or circular needles).  Cast on 13 stitches and knit 2 rows of garter stitch then a row of K1P1 ribbing.  You will begin and end with a knit stitch. Leave the knitting on your needle.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor the second sample you must have either a circular needle or double points because you will slide your work  and work a second row before turning the needle.  The pattern will be worked in four rows: 2 on the RS then 2 on the WS.  You should bring 2 contrasting colors of yarn.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWith color A\, cast on 13 stitches loosely\, preferably using a long tail cast on.  Without turning the needle\, slide the stitches to the other end of the needle\, join color B at the beginning of the cast on stitches and purl across the row.  Both A and B yarns will now be at the same end of the needle.

Who doesn’t love the look of perfect cables?  Longtime KNOW member and knitting expert Cathy Drake will demonstrate how to achieve them when she presents her program\, “Tips and Tricks For a Better Cabling Experience.”  Plan to join us as we learn about basic cable construction\, different types of cables\, how to avoid cable flare and other common pitfalls\, and more. \n \nWe will also be collecting all completed Snuggle blankets.  In addition\, there will be a drawing for a beautiful Grand Prize.  The more Snuggles you make\, the more chances you have to win!  Note:  To be eligible to win\, participants must be members of KANG\, as well as be present at the time of the drawing.

DESCRIPTION:Due to a scheduling conflict\, our February meeting has been changed to the One-Skein Project we talked about at the December party.  In case you missed the last couple meetings\, here are the details. \nEither knit a small project using a single skein of yarn or look through the projects you already have finished and pick one you don’t mind getting  rid of!  Bring it to the February meeting where we will auction them off to each other – no real money here\, just “Paula Bucks”\, the fake bucks that Paula has been handing out at each meeting.  Don’t worry if you don’t have any bucks – some people who only have a few (like me!) will likely give theirs away to others. \nThe auctioned items will also be anonymous.  Come to the meeting even if you don’t have anything to auction – you may get some ideas for future projects!

SUMMARY:KNOW Mtg - Special Pals
DESCRIPTION:Exciting news!  This month’s KNOW meeting will be a benefit for the Special Pals animal shelter in Katy.  In association with the The Snuggles Project\, we will be knitting and crocheting therapy blankets for the homeless pets at the shelter.  Considering the unusually cold winter we’re having\, Special Pals is delighted to be receiving our blankets.  They have set no limitations on size or color\, so you can be as creative as you wish!  A medium-size blanket requires about 700-900 yards of worsted-weight acrylic yarn\, knit double-stranded using a size 11-13 needle. You may use any acrylic yarn of your choice\, worsted-to-bulky-weight\, in any color.  Patterns for the simple Snuggle blankets (both knitted and crocheted) will be available at the meeting or can be downloaded in advance from The Snuggles Project website at SnugglesProject.org.  We will also have on hand a small quantity of acrylic yarn that members may use to make their blankets\, so arrive early if you need yarn.  We hope to warm up as many of our furry friends at Special Pals as possible this winter\, so please plan to join us in January for knitting\, refreshments\, prizes\, and fun.
