Knitting in the Daytime (KIND)
Our program for February 20 is themed around items that our loved ones have knitted. I was inspired by Naomi Enav and her discussion, at the last meeting, about a dress that her husband’s grandmother knit and thought we all have treasures that were created, whether it’s an item knitted by a child or grandparent. Our members are asked to brings items they would like to share and give a brief “history” of the item.
Our members will also be finalizing our make along. Pattern, yarn, and schedule will be discussed.

TIME CHANGE!!
We will be kicking off the New Year with donations to Star of Hope. Please bring a charity knit and/or small toiletries.
We are also going to have a potluck; Valarie Nicholson will be sending out an email closer to the date so that you can sign up to bring goodies to share.
We will also be discussing a potential knit-a-long that will incorporate new skills for some and an opportunity to revisit skills they haven’t used lately.

The program for the October 19th KIND meeting will be presented by Valarie Nicholson. The topic for the program will be Russian Grafting, an alternative to the Kitchener Stitch, which uses a crochet hook rather than a darning needle.
Homework:
Materials:
- One swatch using worsted weight yarn
- 2 dpns and a crochet hook sized for your yarn, example 6-9 sized needles= a K hook.
Make one swatch
Cast on 20 stitches and knit in Stockinette stitches for about 2 inches ending with a knit row.
Transfer stitches evenly onto the dpns.

At our September 19th program for KIND, Kate Wilson will teach us the Finchley Graft. This is a much easier alternative to the Kitchener stitch for grafting two pieces together. The homework for the program is as follows:
HOMEWORK
Materials: 2 swatches (directions below) using a smooth worsted-weight yarn, and a tapestry needle. I found that a straight needle was easier than using the type with a bent tip.
Make 2 swatches.
For each swatch, cast on 10 stitches and knit in stockinette stitch for about 2” ending with a knit row. Cut the yarn, leaving a tail about 10” long. Leave the stitches on the needle.
If you don’t have two sets of needles the same size, after finishing the first swatch, slide the finished swatch onto a smaller size needle to free up your needles for the second swatch.

NOTE: Change of location for June and July! Meetings will be in the Fonteno Center, 6600 Bissonnet (about 2 blocks west of our usual location)
Karen Fern will teach us the Norwegian purl!
This is a fascinating and – to many knitters- unusual way to purl that some say is faster and easier on the hands than how most of us have learned.
Bring yarn and appropriate needles so you can try it and see!
