KIND Meeting – Share with Others

Knitting in the Daytime (KIND) – Thursday, October 19, 10:00am – 12:00pm

DATE: 3rd Thursday of the month, 10am – 12pm

WHERE: Bayland Community Center, 6400 Bissonnet, Houston, TX – near Bissonnet and Hillcroft

The KIND Chapter will hold its next meeting at 10 o’clock on Thursday, October 19 with an informal program which will allow all of the attendees to share information about recent festivals, classes, yarn purchases, patterns, techniques, and anything else related to knitting.

KIND Meeting – 10 Stitch Technique

Hazel Kjos will guide us in learning the Ten Stitch Technique, an easy way to make square objects such as blankets.

For homework: take a favorite solid-colored yarn, cast on 10 stitches and knit in garter stitch for 20 rows (10 ridges.) Slip the first stitch of each row and knit all the way to the last stitch of each row.

At the meeting, Hazel will show the process of mitering to create sharp corners and continuing around the central piece to enlarge it, similar to a Log Cabin Barn Raising quilting pattern.

KIND Meeting – Yarn Tasting

KIND members will get a taste of the retreat while tasting yarn!

Members will split into groups to see and feel yarns made from different fibers and manufacturing methods.

The samples were created by Penny Nelson of Sky Loom Weavers and presented by her at the recent retreat; members will get a chance to experience the samples brought home by KIND’s retreat attendees.

Thanks to Penny Nelson for allowing us to use her handout.

KIND Meeting – Fair Isle (pt. 2)

At the April KIND meeting we will discuss 3 ways to secure a steek.

For those who have done the Fair Isle portion of the “Steek This Coffee Cozy“, you can choose one of these options for your piece.

If you secure your steek at the meeting, you can join us in cutting through the knitting (!!) and then add a cardigan button band.

If you wish to attend and you are not a KIND member, please email Barbara Haas, KIND president.

KIND Meeting – Fair Isle (pt. 1)

KIND will begin a 2-part project where we knit a Fair Isle cozy.

In March, we will learn and practice techniques for stranded knitting in the round.
Details for the project will be sent ahead of the meeting; if you wish to attend and you are not a KIND member, please email Barbara Haas, KIND president.

KIND Meeting – Knitting in the Round

The KIND group will look at the various methods of knitting in the round for small-diameter projects like socks, mittens, and cosy koozies.

All are encouraged to bring fingering-weight yarn and appropriate needles, and we’ll collectively demo and share what we like about using our tools, whether it be circulars (short, extra-long for magic loop, or in pairs), cool new flexi-flips, or good old double-pointed straights.

KIND Meeting – Mosaic (Colorwork pt. 1)

KIND will begin a series of programs on colorwork.

For January, we will focus on mosaic knitting. Mosaic is one of the easiest ways to do complex colorwork patterns but uses only one color at a time. Come join us at the meeting to learn about mosaic knitting and try out one of these patterns.

To participate, you’ll need two colors of the same yarn, a light and a dark (take a photo and use your phone to convert it monochrome/black-and-white to ensure good contrast!). For needles, you can use circular or straight needles, but select ones 1-2 sizes larger than you would normally use for that yarn.
