Fade Away in August! Fades are still a fun trend in the knitting world. Join us at our August meeting where we’ll discuss several ways to transition between different colors or values in your knitting. To sample one or more fade methods, bring yarn in at least 2 colors that are close to each other in value or hue, and bring 1 color that contrasts, along with the appropriate needles and the usual knitting tools. And bring any projects with a fade to share!

KNOW Meeting – Preemie Hats
On Monday, July 29, we at KNOW are hosting a benefit for the NICU at Texas Children’s Hospital in Katy. We will be knitting and crocheting preemie hats, so bring your soft, brightly-colored yarn scraps and appropriate needles. Leftover, superwash sock yarn is perfect for these tiny hats. The NICU is also accepting baby blankets for those of you who are so inclined.
We will be providing patterns for both knitted and crocheted versions of preemie hats. These patterns are written in the round using fingering/sport-weight yarn and size 4 needles/size 7 hooks. You are also welcome to bring your favorite patterns, bearing in mind that your hats should fit anywhere from a lemon to an orange.
Please join us so that we can have a robust response to the needs of the babies at Texas Children’s. See you there!
KNOW Meeting –
We all love the time we spend together showing off our finished projects. So, we are going to have a little fun with Show & Share during our “Summer Show & Share Sheepstakes.” Everything you complete that was begun no earlier than May 20 (the date of our last meeting) and that contains at least 150 yards of fiber will be eligible to win a prize. We will be awarding prizes to recognize the largest item made (based on yardage); the most items completed; and finally, the most unusual item. So get knitting! And please bring your all your finished projects, not just those that fit the contest criteria, to Show & Share on June 24.
In addition, we will be voting to fill several Executive Board positions, along with the positions of KNOW president, KNOW Membership Coordinator, and KNOW Program Coordinator(s). Voting is open to KNOW members only. Please plan to attend and participate in the nomination and voting process.
Finally, every KNOW member will receive a special gift to commemorate our 2018-2019 year. Be sure to come to the meeting to claim yours!
KNOW Meeting – Shawl Shapes Primer
PLEASE NOTE: Our May meeting is being held a week early in order not to conflict with Memorial Day.
At our meeting on May 20, Roxanne Rump will present her “Shawl Shapes Primer,” where she will describe in detail the different shapes of shawls, the features of each, and how to go about knitting them. Roxanne, the head of the KNOT chapter and a skilled knitter, has developed a very informative and helpful handout that will be provided at the meeting. Please plan to attend and learn everything you need to know in order to choose and create the perfect shawl for yourself or your loved ones.
KNOW Meeting – Mitered squares
At our meeting on Monday, April 29, longtime Guild member Jan Clark will show us how to knit mitered squares. Please bring a small amount of yarn (scraps of leftover sock yarn are perfect), needles in a size appropriate for your yarn, and a safety-pin-type marker. We will be learning to pick up stitches and knit double decreases. Jan will have handouts available.
KNOW Meeting – Tawashi Knots
Do you need some Short-Attention Span knitting? Well, join us at KNOW on Monday, March 25th at 6:30 pm for a fun program by Bethel King on knitting Tawashi Knots! What are Tawashi Knots? They are useful little projects you can wash dishes with or use as soft scrubbies to wash your face. Perfect for gift-giving with a lovely bar of soap, a nice cleanser, or a matching knitted washcloth! This item combines knitting AND origami – so please join us for this innovative project.We will be using the Tawashi Knots pattern, which is free on Ravelry. We will provide copies of the pattern at the meeting.
You will need:
- Worsted-weight cotton yarn such as Peaches and Cream or Sugar and Cream in 2 colors (partial balls will definitely work as these can be stash-busters). One color can be the new “Scrubby” or “Cotton Scrubby” yarn but the first time through, regular worsted-weight cotton yarn is recommended.
- Size 6 knitting needles – can be straights or circulars (I normally use 7’s for cotton but you want a bit tighter gauge to increase the scrubbiness).
- 5 Stitch Markers
- Yarn needle for sewing in ends.
For Crocheters: You can use the Whirligig-Tawashi pattern (also free on Ravelry) as an alternate with a G hook. We will provide copies of the pattern at the meeting.
Our chapter meets at Spring Creek Barbecue (corner of I-10 and Westgreen) in Katy from 6:30-8:30 pm. Many of our members arrive early at the restaurant to have dinner. Everyone is welcome.
KNOW Meeting – Valentines for Peyton Heart Project
Get ready, Valentines! On Monday, February 25, 2019, the KNOW chapter will host a Benefit for the Peyton Heart Project. We will be knitting and crocheting colorful hearts as part of a worldwide mission to bring awareness to the issues of teen suicide and bullying, to show people that their lives are worth living, and that every life matters. We will be adding special tags to our hearts identifying them as part of the Project. The hearts may then be scattered at large in your community or be part of our chapter donation to the Peyton Heart Project here in Texas.
Bring scraps of worsted-weight yarn in cheerful colors (no angora or mohair) along with your choice of knitting needles (both straight and circular) and/or crochet hooks. We will provide more information about the project; patterns for both knitted and crocheted hearts; tags to attach to your heart(s); and a delicious, heart-y dessert. In addition, a grand prize will be awarded to the person who completes the most hearts during the meeting! Please plan to join your friends for an evening of knitting, crocheting, and becoming part of this important effort to increase self-esteem among our youth.
KNOW Meeting – Decorative Cast-on Techniques
At our KNOW meeting on January 28, well-known Katy artist and knitting instructor Sony Hartley will present her program which was originally scheduled for October. During the program, “Decorative Cast-on Techniques,” Sony will teach three different ways to cast on a knitting project: The I-cord Cast-on, Picot Cast-on, and Flower Cast-on. In order to participate, bring worsted-weight yarn, any type of knitting needles size 8-10, and a crochet hook size C or smaller. Sony will supply beads and flowers for our use. Please plan to attend what promises to be a fun and interesting program.
KNOW Holiday Party
Our annual KNOW Holiday Party will be held on Monday, December 10, 2018, from 6:30-8:30 pm at Spring Creek Barbecue (northwest corner of I-10 and Westgreen) in Katy. We will play a funny game where everyone wins a prize, sample delicious holiday cookies courtesy of our KNOW board of officers, and save plenty of time for knitting and visiting with friends. If you’d like to participate in the (optional) gift exchange, bring a wrapped, unlabeled knitting notion valued at around $15 with you to the meeting. Everyone is welcome!
KNOW Meeting – Sock Fundamentals
At our meeting on Monday, November 26, 2018, longtime KNOW member and sock-knitting expert Lynn Hensley will present her program on “Sock Fundamentals.” Lynn will explain in detail basic sock construction and architecture, discuss the most popular heel and toe options, describe how and what to measure for a perfect fit, as well as talk about needle choices and appropriate yarns to use. This program is aimed toward knitters of all skill levels, so please join us.
Our KNOW Annual Holiday Party is scheduled for December 10, 2018, at Spring Creek Barbecue. If you’d like to participate in the (optional) gift exchange, please bring with you a wrapped, unlabeled knitting notion (or notions) worth approximately $15.
