KNOW Meeting – Pattern swap

At this month’s KNOW meeting, we will have fun swapping patterns by way of our “Free Pattern Exchange.” What’s your favorite free pattern? Is it a go-to project when it comes to gifts for others? Your most-often-used stash buster? Whatever it may be, bring an example of a finished project to the meeting, along with copies of the pattern to share with like-minded stitchers. (Remember that the pattern must be free or you must have permission to share it.)

We will also be collecting any outstanding Snuggles for delivery to Special Pals. In addition, we’ll have sign-up sheets for the classes to be offered at our Four-Corners Skills Workshop to be held in May. See you there!

KNIT Meeting – Steeking

Steek!  Eek! – That’s the theme of our April meeting.  Be adventurous and join us as we boldly embark on an event where only fearless knitters dare…that is, cutting our knitting with courage and fortitude.

Supplies

  • The pattern used for the project is “Steek This Coffee Cozy” by Rachel Henry, and it is free on Ravelry.  This is knitted in the round.
  • Worsted weight 100% wool (avoid superwash) – at least three colors
  • Circular needles or DPN appropriate for the yarn weight
  • Scissor

Homework

You can knit the cozy using the charted Fair Isle pattern given, or you can knit stripes, or your own pattern, or only one color.

The important part is that you work the number of stitches called for (begins with only 49 and increases up to 53) for close to the number of rows given (only 25!).

We will steek your knitting, make the band, and sew on buttons as time allows at the meeting.

Scary, fun things (like roller coasters, haunted houses, etc.) are always more fun with friends.  Knit your cozy and come to the Steek! Eek! Meeting.  We will cut our knitting together!

KIK Meeting – Games

Our program will consist of knitting games – details will be provided at the meeting.  Please RSVP  no later than Friday, April 6th – the RSVP is required for prizes.  Crocheters and knitters are welcome and the only supplies you need are your needles.  Everything else will be provided by the program coordinator.

CHIX Meeting – Substituting fibers

Sandy Zeringue (formerly of Knitting in the Loop) will talk about substituting yarns, with the emphasis on different fibers. For example, what can you expect if the pattern calls for merino and you want to use cotton instead?

CHIX Mtg – Park Avenue Yarn

As knitters in the Greater Houston area, we are fortunate to have several very nice yarn shops, but we all have seen a number of our favorite shops go out of business for a variety of reasons. We probably all do some of our yarn shopping online, but most knitters and crocheters want to touch and feel the yarn, want to see the actual colors of the yarn, want their purchases immediately, or want to visit a shop where you might have the companionship of other knitters. These are only some of the reasons we value our local yarn shops and want to keep them successful here in the Houston area. At the February 9th meeting of Chix with Sticks we will have Michelle McHazlett, the owner of Park Avenue Yarns in League City, talk about her experiences as a local yarn shop owner. She will also be interested in your experiences as a yarn shopper. Please be thinking about your connections to a local yarn shop and bring your questions and comments for Michelle.

KNOW Meeting – Cookie Cutter Washcloths

Celebrate the arrival of Spring with KNOW as we learn to knit “Cookie Cutter Washcloths For Every Occasion.”  Have you ever knit a cotton washcloth?  They make beautiful gifts for friends and loved ones. Sybil Koempel will present our program, where we will be using cookie cutters to create lovely motifs we can add to our hand-knit washcloths.  Bring to the meeting a skein of worsted-weight cotton yarn, your choice of needle, and a three-inch cookie cutter, and get ready to knit a one-of-a-kind washcloth to keep for yourself or give away.

KNOT Meeting – Avery Cowl KAL

We will be starting a knitalong in March. Last month we chose the pattern, a cowl called Avery designed by Kate Gagnon Osborn. This pattern is free on Ravelry and requires only one skein of a DK weight yarn. A sample of Avery will be available for you to see at the meeting in case you didn’t see it in January.

KNIT Meeting – Take a break!

Everyone needs a break! Join us Tuesday, March 13 during Spring Break Week. There is no program in March and we will use this time to knit and socialize. What were your best Spring Break getaways and where would you like to go next? Bring your stories and memories, and share them with the group.
