SoCK Meeting – Swatching

Join us as we talk about KNITTING DANGEROUSLY!! Wait, what? Dangerously? I’m talking about jumping into that new project with that yummy yarn without knitting a GAUGE SWATCH! Let’s bring it out of the shadows and talk about why you should be swatching and when you can get away with not swatching. Bring a swatch you’ve made up and we’ll talk about what it’s telling us. Don’t worry if you don’t have a swatch, there will be extras to share.

SoCK Meeting – Shadow Knitting

Have you heard of Shadow Knitting, or Illusion Knitting?  Join SoCK this month with Andrea Conrad from KIK. She will be presenting this technique.

Bring two colors of yarn, contrasting is better, a dark color and a lighter one.  You will also need to bring appropriate needles.  We will be working on a coaster

SoCK Meeting – Peace Pals

Join us in making Pocket Peace Pals with Kate Wilson!  Using scrap worsted weight yarn, cast on 32 stitches and knit 50 rows in a stripe pattern.  Then sew it up, stuff it,  add a few details, and you have a Pocket Peace Pal!  See the pattern here.

Bring in your Peace Pal ready to sew up, or bring scrap yarn and we’ll knit them up in the meeting.  Either way, we’ll have some great Pals to forward to children in global areas of conflict.

Please make the face area medium or dark brown.

SoCK Meeting – Discussion of yarn

What is yarn? Yarn by definition is a continuous often plied strand composed of either natural or man-made fibers or filaments and used in weaving and knitting to form cloth.  Have you wondered what ply is or what fiber options are available?  Join SoCK for a discussion on yarn.

For our June meeting SoCK will be going on a field trip! Join us at Color Me Mine in Cypress from 11:00 – 1:00 to paint a yarn bowl. The cost is $30.00 plus tax. Please RSVP to SoCK by May 26 if you would like to attend.

SoCK Meeting – Mitered corners

Join SoCK as we explore a mitered corner.  Please bring cotton yarn and size 8 or 9 needles.  We will continue sharing our progress on the KAL shawls.

SoCK Meeting – Shawl KAL

Join SoCK in our shawl KAL.  Choose a pattern, your colorway, bring your yarn and needles and let’s begin.  The pattern choices are:  Antarktis by Janina Kallio, available for purchase on Ravelry  OR  Diffusion by Tetiana Otruta, a free pattern available from Knitpicks.  Both are asymmetric triangular shawls.

Antarktis Shawl
Diffusion Shawl

Antarktis alternates garter stitch and lace sections.  You could use one colorway or alternate the sections in different colors, or blend two colors.  Diffusion is worked sideways in garter stitch with simple lace.  This shawl could use as many as five colors, two colors,  on just one.  It’s your choice!  This is an excellent opportunity to dig into your stash and be creative.

A yarn swift and ball winder will be available if you need help getting started.  Looking forward to seeing everyone’s choices.
