KIK Meeting – Cables without cable needles

We meet at Kingwood Medical Center in the Kingwood room on the third Saturday of the month at 10 am. I’m looking forward to our April  20, 2019,  program with  Elizabeth Spies teaching us how to knit cables without cable needles.

Materials needed are worsted weight yarn, in a solid, light color and a needle of the size normally used for that weight yarn

Homework.  Cast on 24 stitches and knit 4 rows even, then begin pattern as follows:

Row 1:  K2, P4, K4, P4, K4, P4, K2
Row 2:  K6, P4, K4, P4, K6.

Repeat rows 1 and 2 once more, for a total of 8 rows from the cast on edge.

KNOW Meeting – Tawashi Knots

Do you need some Short-Attention Span knitting? Well, join us at KNOW on Monday, March 25th at 6:30 pm for a fun program by Bethel King on knitting Tawashi Knots! What are Tawashi Knots? They are useful little projects you can wash dishes with or use as soft scrubbies to wash your face. Perfect for gift-giving with a lovely bar of soap, a nice cleanser, or a matching knitted washcloth! This item combines knitting AND origami – so please join us for this innovative project.

We will be using the Tawashi Knots pattern, which is free on Ravelry. We will provide copies of the pattern at the meeting.

You will need:
  • Worsted-weight cotton yarn such as Peaches and Cream or Sugar and Cream in 2 colors (partial balls will definitely work as these can be stash-busters).  One color can be the new “Scrubby” or “Cotton Scrubby” yarn but the first time through, regular worsted-weight cotton yarn is recommended.
  • Size 6 knitting needles – can be straights or circulars (I normally use 7’s for cotton but you want a bit tighter gauge to increase the scrubbiness).
  • 5 Stitch Markers
  • Yarn needle for sewing in ends.

For Crocheters: You can use the Whirligig-Tawashi pattern (also free on Ravelry) as an alternate with a G hook.  We will provide copies of the pattern at the meeting.

Our chapter meets at Spring Creek Barbecue (corner of I-10 and Westgreen) in Katy from 6:30-8:30 pm. Many of our members arrive early at the restaurant to have dinner. Everyone is welcome.

KNIT Meeting – Make your own stitch markers!

The days of boring stitch markers are over!  For March we will be learning how to make our own.  SoCK’s own Keena Kang will be demonstrating multiple techniques to make your own stitch markers.  If you have the following supplies, please bring them, if not, we will have supplies to share.  Supplies: lobster claw clasps;  4mm jump rings; 6mm jump rings; 10mm jump ring; charm/accent beads with holes at both ends; charms with a hole at 1 end; 2 inch head pins; wire cutters; and round nose pliers.

KNOT Meeting – Sweaters

Roxanne Rump will lead an interactive discussion on some common sweater types, focusing on design considerations and pros and cons of each type of construction.  Examples and patterns will be available to demonstrate the concepts discussed.

SoCK Meeting – Shawl KAL

Join SoCK in our shawl KAL.  Choose a pattern, your colorway, bring your yarn and needles and let’s begin.  The pattern choices are:  Antarktis by Janina Kallio, available for purchase on Ravelry  OR  Diffusion by Tetiana Otruta, a free pattern available from Knitpicks.  Both are asymmetric triangular shawls.

Antarktis Shawl
Diffusion Shawl

Antarktis alternates garter stitch and lace sections.  You could use one colorway or alternate the sections in different colors, or blend two colors.  Diffusion is worked sideways in garter stitch with simple lace.  This shawl could use as many as five colors, two colors,  on just one.  It’s your choice!  This is an excellent opportunity to dig into your stash and be creative.

A yarn swift and ball winder will be available if you need help getting started.  Looking forward to seeing everyone’s choices.

KNOW Meeting – Valentines for Peyton Heart Project

Get ready, Valentines!  On Monday, February 25, 2019, the KNOW chapter will host a Benefit for the Peyton Heart Project.  We will be knitting and crocheting colorful hearts as part of a worldwide mission to bring awareness to the issues of teen suicide and bullying, to show people that their lives are worth living, and that every life matters.  We will be adding special tags to our hearts identifying them as part of the Project. The hearts may then be scattered at large in your community or be part of our chapter donation to the Peyton Heart Project here in Texas.

Bring scraps of worsted-weight yarn in cheerful colors (no angora or mohair) along with your choice of knitting needles (both straight and circular) and/or crochet hooks. We will provide more information about the project; patterns for both knitted and crocheted hearts; tags to attach to your heart(s); and a delicious, heart-y dessert. In addition, a grand prize will be awarded to the person who completes the most hearts during the meeting!  Please plan to join your friends for an evening of knitting, crocheting, and becoming part of this important effort to increase self-esteem among our youth.

KNIT Meeting – Imagine YOU are a lifelong knitting project

Imagine YOU are a lifelong knitting project

Bring your curiosity, your imagination, your aches and pains as well as your passion for the craft. We will discuss how to troubleshoot pain or injury that may be caused by your greatest creative outlet. We will explore and explain simple, straightforward ways in which you can balance your structure to continue to enjoy your craft without causing damage to the body.

KIK Meeting – One-color Brioche

Our KIK Chapter meeting will be Saturday, February 16th from 10:00 to 12:00 at the Kingwood Medical Center, in the Kingwood Room.  We are very fortunate to have Elizabeth Spies as our instructor, teaching us Brioche using one color.  Supplies needed are 2 skeins of worsted weight yarn in a light, solid color and knitting needles 1 to 2 sizes smaller than would be used for that weight yarn.  I am looking forward to the class.  Hope to see you there.
